The Rain Tree is a tropical American tree that was first introduced into Singapore in 1876. It is commonly planted throughout Singapore for shade, and can be commonly seen along major roads or expressways. Often, entire rows of this tree are planted to create the effect of an avenue or green tunnel. This tree can grow up to 20 - 25m high, with a crown spread of 20 - 30m. It is known for its massive, umbrella-shaped, widely spreading crown. The leaves have a curious habit of folding up at night, or during rainy days when the sky is overcast. This is why it is called the Rain Tree.
