My Green Space

The Saga Tree is a deciduous tree that grows up to 20m tall. It is hardy, fast-growing, and low-maintenance. It has a large spreading crown, making it suitable for providing shade in large gardens. The characteristic scarlet seeds are known for their uniform weight: 4 seeds make up 1 gram. Because of this, they were used widely in the past as weight measures for gold and silver.

“Otter Jump” by Steven Tor – Grand Prize Winner, Open Category. Smooth Otters are a critically endangered species in Singapore. This one was photographed while leaping out of the water to catch a crab.

“Impaled Meal” by Pan Ken Nie – Grand Prize Winner, Student Category. This Long-Tailed Shrike was caught in the act of attacking its prey, a lizard.

“Crab Defence” by Endy – Merit Winner, Open Category. The Orange Fiddler Crab uses its enlarged claw to defend its burrow, and to fight male rivals while courting female crabs.

“Scratch My Back” – by Chua Ying Jia, Merit Winner, Student Category. This amusing shot of three Long-Tailed Macaques was snapped along Old Upper Thomson Road.

“Raising A Family” – by David Tan Siah Hin, Merit Winner, Open Category. A family of Little Grebes rests at Lorong Halus, a former landfill site that is home to this endangered bird and many other local fauna.

The BiodiverCity photo exhibition, held outside Mandarin Gallery along Orchard Road, brought snapshots of our local flora and fauna right into the heart of town.

Freeing The Forest From Weeds

Keeping the forest weed-free is an important part of nature conservation. Roy Tan, a Senior Outreach Officer with NParks, turns this task into a learning experience for the volunteers of the Central Nature Reserve.
